In loving memory ~
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mum and nona, Elvira Veronica Shelley, on December 14th, 2021 at age 96. Vera passed peacefully of natural causes. She was born in Trail and lived there all of her life. She is survived by her son Wayne, daughter-in- law Gudrun, granddaughter Amanda (Tyler), daughter Christie Adamus and grandsons Ryan (Nicole) and Connor. She is also survived by her sisters Marylin Halliday and Melinda Bryan (Pat) and brother Mike Matteucci (Phyllis) as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Edward, her son- in-law Peter Adamus, her sister Lea Balano and her parents Eni and Antonio Matteucci.
Vera lived a full and long life. She loved her family with all her heart and was happiest when spending time with her children and grandchildren. She was proud of her Italian heritage and celebrated it with her cooking and baking. A highlight of her life was a trip to Italy with her father and siblings to connect with her Italian family.
Vera spent many years skiing Red Mountain with her family and long-time friend and neighbour Jean Cargnelli. She also enjoyed summertime camping trips and gardening. After Ed's retirement they enjoyed long walks to town and fishing at Kootenay Lake. Vera enjoyed being a member of the Columbo Lodge, especially enjoyed cooking for weddings and banquets with her cousins Nadia and Guido Matteucci and long-time friend Ilva Corazza. She was the Ultimate Smoke Eaters Fan and was known for years as the "Cookie Lady", baking cookies for the team's away games. She was an independent and energetic lady with a smile that lit up a room.
We are grateful for family, friends, neighbours and the many service providers who helped Mum achieve her goal of living in her own home for as long as possible. We would also like to thank the staff at Columbia View Lodge for their commitment to professional and compassionate care and for making our mother and nona's last 18 months of life comfortable and pleasant.
Our mum will be laid to rest with Ed and her father, in the spring of 2022.
