Hugo Mattias Salo

Hugo Mattias Salo

Hugo Mattias Salo, of Trail, passed away peacefully in the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital on July 12, 2011. Hugo would have been 90 years old in October of this year.

He was born in Wapella, Saskatchewan in 1921 and moved to Nelson with his mom in the 1930’s and then to Rossland where he worked at the Rossland Golf Course and later hired by CM&S (Teck/Cominco). Hugo spent 1942 to 1945 serving for the Canadian Army and then returned to Rossland and his job at Cominco when he was done serving. It was then when he met and married the love of his life, Muriel. In June of 1955, they bought a house and moved to Warfield. Hugo retired from Cominco in 1982 after working there for 42 years.

Hugo is survived by his son Jon (Julia), and three grandchildren; Aaron, Shauna, and Jeffery all of Faro, Yukon. He is also survived by his brother George Collett (Frances), of Prince George, nieces Wendy Crossland and family of Fort St. John, Joyce Collett and family of Mayo, Yukon and Shelley Livesey of Port Coquitlam.

Dad was well liked by all he met and his infectious smile and sense of humour will be missed by all. He enjoyed his outings to the senior’s Centre, Son’s of Norway, Lil T’s, Early Bird breakfasts, music in the park, his barber and many more activities. Due to his deteriorating health, he missed being able to attend services at the United Church, long drives (especially to the Yukon and Prince George), bowling, gardening and tinkering in general. Hugo had been a resident of Shaver’s Bench for the last 15years.

The family wishes to send a special thank you to the Doctors, Nurses and Staff in ICU, 3rd floor and Emergency at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital for all of the care and service over the past few years and especially over the last few weeks. Thank you to the friends and neighbours for the visits and help while Hugo was in the hospital and at home before that.

A memorial service will be announced later this year at a time when all of the family members will be able to attend. Al Grywacheski of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services ™ has been entrusted with arrangements.
