January 9, 1957 - May 19, 2020
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Bernard (Bernie) Penner on May 19, 2020. His big spirit, kind generous nature, and willingness to help wherever needed will be remembered forever. Bernie, known as Sabre to his friends, was a family man, a loving father, and a best friend to the love of his life, Gwen Hubscher. He is survived by his parents, Gerry and Marianne Penner; sisters Cindy (Dave), Gerianne (Joey), Linda (Glenn), Sharon (Bob); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins. He will be lovingly remembered by his children Colby (Kim) and Samantha.
When he was not helping others, you could find Bernie working on a car in his driveway while greeting passersby (known as the Sunningdale Welcoming Committee). Bernie was well known for his heart of gold, witty humor, and a smile starting in his eyes while he waited for you to catch up to his joke. He was a true friend to everyone, making lasting friendships through sports like hockey, baseball, hunting, and fishing. He loved being at home, puttering in his yard, relaxing at Christina Lake, and golfing. He was loved by all.
A service was held for immediate family due to the current health crisis. A video will be available online at a later date. Bill Clark of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation ServicesTM has been entrusted with arrangements.
As an expression of sympathy, donations in Bernie's name may be made to KidSport at C/O Trail Aquatic & Leisure Centre, 1875 Columbia Avenue, Trail, BC, V1R 4T8 or online at www.kidsportcanada.ca/ british-columbia/greater-trail/
