August 21, 1921 - January 2, 2023
In loving memory ~
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Janet "Floss" Finlay on January 2, 2023. As was her wish, Janet died peacefully in her home where she had created memories for 75 of her 101 years of life.
Janet's story begins with her birth to John and Josie Maglio on August 21, 1921, in Grand Forks. Shortly thereafter, the Maglio family moved to Nelson where Janet remained until she married Robert "Bob" Finlay from Trail. Bob and Janet went on to raise 4 children - Bob (Ruth), Murray (Jane), Ken, and Janet (Mike Mana). The family grew to include their 6 grandchildren Rick Finlay (Tracy), Brian Finlay (April), Kristy Finlay (Pete Corcoran), Jennifer Dalton (Mike), Ryan Mana (Haley Berryman), and Kyle Mana (Sevanna Locke) and 7 great-grandchildren Rick Finlay (Melissa), Jenna Finlay (Mark Collins), Aidan Dalton, Keeley Dalton, Jillian Corcoran, Maya Corcoran, and Nolan Finlay.
Amongst Janet's lifelong pastimes were baking, knitting, reading and travelling. Her well-worn cookbooks are sprinkled with notes in her beautiful handwriting to remind her which baked goods are each family member's favourite because, for Janet, baking was a love language. In addition to knitting for family, Janet knit hundreds of hats and scarves that she donated to cancer patients and those in need. Janet was a voracious reader who favoured memoirs; her books were prized possessions. She enjoyed all aspects of travel and considered herself to be incredibly lucky to have family members as travelling companions for most trips. Two cherished trips were visits to her mother's birthplace in Scotland and her father's birthplace in Italy.
Janet was predeceased by her husband Bob who died in 1986, daughter-in-law Ruth Finlay, brothers John and Charlie Maglio, and sister Rosina Koehle. Sadly, Janet was also predeceased by 2 sons Murray and Ken.
In addition to Janet's surviving immediate family, there are many other loved ones who will carry her memory forward. Janet was fortunate to have an intimate circle of wonderful nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbours, and friends who kept a watchful eye over her. A heartfelt thanks to all of you from the Finlay family. We are also so grateful for the compassionate care provided by April's Caregiving staff and the palliative care nurses who made it possible for Janet to pass in her home.
We'll never know the secret to Janet's longevity but, with a teasing smile, she just might say "it was the Sees Chocolates and Bailey's Irish Cream".
As an expression of sympathy, please consider making donations in Janet's name to the Terry Fox Foundation (https://terryfox.org) or Canuck Place (https://www.canuckplace.org).
