John Charlton, aged 84, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 16th at Poplar Ridge, with his family by his side.

He will be greatly missed by Maureen, his beloved wife of 58 years; his children, Paul (Tracy) and Nicola; his grandchildren, Jesse and Chris; also by many cherished friends and ex-colleagues in England and BC. He was predeceased by his parents, David (94) and Violet (105).

John was born in England where he earned a BSc. Degree in Electrical Engineering at King’s College University. He worked at the N. E. Electricity Board and later became a lecturer at Durham Technical College before fulfilling his dream of emigrating to Canada in 1973 with his wife and family. He became Superintendent of Construction and Maintenance of Substations for West Kootenay Power, where he enjoyed the camaraderie of his colleagues, fell in love with BC and was forever grateful that we could make our home here, together with his parents, who arrived 6 months later.

After retirement in 1994 he enjoyed spending time with his family in Vancouver, cooking gourmet meals, travelling and golfing, always looking for that extra yardage from the next new driver.

He had a great sense of humour and loved to tease the nurses in the Dialysis Unit at KBRH who looked after him for 4 ½ years with kindness, compassion and loving care. Thanks to all of you, especially Donna and Barry. Thank you to Drs. Kruthoff, Zhang, Raju and Aiken and the great staff at Poplar Ridge who helped him through this difficult journey. He has finally got his “WINGS”.

Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 22nd at 11:30 a.m. at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church, 1347 Pine Ave., Trail. Gwen Ziprick of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation Services™ has been entrusted with arrangements.

As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made in John’s name to the Dialysis Unit of Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital, 1200 Hospital Bench, Trail, BC, V1R 4M1 or online at www.kbrhhealthfoundation.ca or to a charity of your choice.
