March 22, 1941 - November 1, 2021
Elizabeth (Liz) Alice Honey passed away peacefully at home, on her own terms, with her family by her side on November 1, 2021.
Liz was an amazing mother, sister, grandmother, cousin, aunty, and friend. She is loved and will be missed by her daughter Sandy Woodhouse and grandchildren Lewis and Maya; son Rodger Woodhouse (Karen) and grandchildren Luke (Faye) and Mollie (Red); son Gerry Woodhouse (Lorie) and grandchildren Eric (Amber), Ashley (Mike), Maggie (Darren), Brielle (Jordan) and Tyler (Hayley); and son Rick Woodhouse (Lori) and grandchildren Sean (Roxy) and Kara (Tyler). Mom was incredibly proud of her kids and their families. Liz also had four great grandchildren she loved dearly: Ainsley, Ashton, Sloane, and Denver. She is also survived by her sister and brother-in-law Susan and Gary Hutchison and nephew Dan (Flora) and niece Charis. She was predeceased by her husband Ron in 2005 and her parents Jim and Edith Duff.
Liz was born in Calgary on March 22, 1941. She moved to Rossland at age four when her father started work at Cominco after World War II ended. There she graduated high school, raised her family with first husband Terry and started her 22-year career at the Rossland Credit Union as teller, clerk and finally as office manager. She married Ron Honey in 1987 and in 1996 they retired and built their dream home at Schroeder Creek near Kaslo. They enjoyed travelling the world extensively and Mom renewed her interest in painting after putting down her brush a few years after high school. Water colours and acrylics were her specialty. Mom was well known in Kaslo, Nelson and West Kootenay art circles and many family members proudly display her paintings in their homes. She held several public exhibits, and she was proud that she sold several of her works. Mom and Ron also loved fishing on Kootenay Lake and enjoyed many salmon fishing trips to Ucluelet with friends Harry and Gail.
After Ron's death in 2005, Mom stayed at Schroeder Creek for another 9 years. She traveled and enjoyed close friendships with her neighbours, her circle of painting friends, the "ladies who lunch", and liked spending time with her sister, her cousins, and her family. Friends and family were everything to Mom and she cherished the time spent with each one of them. She loved to create beauty in her gardens and was an avid reader.
In 2014 Mom moved to Nelson where she met many new friends in her art and bridge circles. Mom always loved to play cards, especially when she won! She enjoyed outings with her friend Sheila and took up playing bridge 4-5 times a week, initially at the seniors' centre and later with dear friends Maxine, Jean, Verna, and Nina. She also played Canasta and Words with Friends with her sister Susan and many others. She met new friends easily wherever her interests and travels took her.
Mom's last years were difficult as her physical health declined due to lung disease, but she remained her intelligent, witty, positive, and dignified self until the end. She was able to spend treasured time with all her family and friends in her final weeks. She knew she was dearly loved, and her family and friends knew she loved them. Nothing was left unsaid. She blessed us all with many things when she was healthy and just as many during her decline.
Liz and her family would like to thank Dr Belinda van der Berg and Dr Graeme McCauley for their compassion and care over the years. Thank you to the Home Care and Palliative Nurses of Gordon Road Wellness and the Nelson Home Care aide workers who were so attentive and caring in her declining years and enabled Mom to stay in her home until her final time. Thank you to the pharmacy staff at Shoppers in Nelson who went the extra mile for Mom. A special thank you as well to Kendall McPherson and Megan Coupland for their support of our Mom.
Liz's family has gathered to celebrate her life and, as she requested, no public service will be held. Those wishing to donate in Liz's memory can give to their favourite cause.
