June 16, 1927 - November 9, 2021
Lorna Elizabeth Measure died peacefully at Kootenay Lake Hospital in Nelson on Nov. 9th, 2021 with family by her side. She was born June 16th, 1927 in Shellbrook, Saskatchewan to homesteaders Robert and Irene Hamilton, who raised their two sons and six daughters on the family farm.
Lorna is best known as a popular and dedicated Grade 9 English teacher at the Trail Junior Secondary School from the late 1950s to her retirement in the mid 1980's. She earned her teaching certificate and taught at a one-room schoolhouse in southern Saskatchewan before moving to British Columbia where she received a Bachelor of Education from the University of British Columbia. Prior to teaching in Trail, Lorna taught in Pemberton, Dawson City in the Yukon, Massett and Skidigate in Haida Gwaii, Nanaimo, Forest Grove, and Fruitvale.
She married Frank Measure of Nanaimo, and they built a home in the hamlet of Oasis near Trail. After Frank's early death in 1961, Lorna remained at the Oasis home until her passing. An avid skier, Lorna could be found on Red Mountain with her longtime skiing, camping, and fishing companion Jim Haight (Sr.) of Rossland. Lorna loved to garden, was an artist, wrote short stories and poetry, and had a keen interest in reading, foreign cultures, and travel.
Lorna is predeceased by husband Frank, sister Cora Kaiser, and brother-in-law Len Kaiser who were also long-time Trail residents. She is the last of Shellbrook's Hamilton clan of two brothers and six sisters to pass away. Lorna will be especially remembered for her energy, resilience as a single mother, career woman, and maintaining her sense of humour through it all.
Lorna is survived by her son Harry Measure and daughter-in-law Barbara of Whistler, and two grandchildren- Liam and Alexandra, and many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held at a later time with internment at Mountain View Cemetery in Rossland.
