Mary died peacefully on November 14, 2016 at the age of 91. She is survived by her loving husband of 66 years Art Winstanley; her daughters Linda Hirtle (Rick), Sue (David Brown), and Mary-Kaye; grandchildren Stephanie, Megan, Alex, and Geoff; and niece Selina Buck and family.
Mary grew up in New Westminster, the youngest of four children, and came to Trail in 1945 to teach elementary school, where she met her husband Art. They married in 1950 and settled in Trail to raise their family. She was at home with her girls while they were growing up, and later resumed teaching, retiring in 1986. Mary loved teaching young children and took pleasure in following their progress through the years. She was often rewarded by meeting former students and hearing warm recollections of their time with her.
Mary enjoyed painting, knitting, embroidery, gardening and travel, but her abiding joy in life was her family. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother and will be deeply missed by all of us who loved her.
We are very grateful for the compassionate care provided by the 3rd floor nurses at the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital.
There will be a private family gathering in her memory at a later date.
