On November 12, Robert Elza Smith passed away quietly in the night. He was comforted by the incredible staff at CVL, his daughter Joanne and her dog Bella. Bella meant the world to Dad as he was always an animal lover.
Robert was very involved with the Odd Fellows Lodge and served as Grand Patriarch from 1978 - 1979. He also represented the lodge at two international conferences in 1979 and 1981. He was awarded medals of honour, one being presented to him by his granddaughter Emily Nomland in 2004 with the Decoration of Chivalry. Bob was a millwright at Cominco for 43 years and also worked delivering the Province and Sun newspapers...we all had a paper routes.
Robert was born in Regina on March 26, 1929 and moved to the Kootenays in 1948. His brother Harold and parents had already had moved out west. On July 16, 1955 he married Margaret Davies. She was a widow with two young children; William Kelly and Maureen Kelly. Bob and Marge had three other children;
Catherine, Robert, and Joanne. Margaret passed away in 1985 of cancer. As the years went by, he was married two other times but lost both wives to illnesses. Robert was a wonderful father, husband, grandpa and great-grandpa.
He loved fishing, gardening, having a chuckle, curling, fixing things, building things and life in general. He will be greatly missed in many hearts.
A Memorial Service will be held at the United Steelworkers 480 Hall at 910 Portland Street, Trail, BC on Saturday, December 7, 2019 at 1 pm.
