Ronald Oliver Staudinger of Castlegar BC passed away peacefully Saturday, February 2, 2013. Ron was born in Sylvan Lake Alberta on March 4, 1926 to Hilja and Onni Staudinger.

Ron had the opportunity to experience several places to live as a young man as his parents lived in different places like Rocky Mountain House and Rossland, eventually settling in Castlegar. Of all of life’s experiences, Ron’s most passionate experience was meeting the love of his life, Vera. Ron and Vera were married in 1949. They were soul mates from the beginning until Vera’s passing in 2007.

Ron attended school until grade 8 but life’s experiences taught him so much more. He served in the navy, at an early age, as a Submarine Detector. It was during the Normandi invasion that Ron was wounded. The scars were reminders both physically and emotionally. He saw the greatness in the country that he lived in and it was a reminder of why he served in the war and the scars were his Diploma and Graduation. After the war, Ron worked various jobs like taking samples at a mine in Uranium City, helping to build an oil refinery in Edmonton, working at a coal mine in Alberta (this was where he met Vera) and eventually working at Cominco, separating silver and gold.

Ron had hobbies such as fishing, travelling, golfing and hunting. Ron enjoyed getting together with family and friends. Their home was always open to anyone who stopped by.

Ron in survived by several family members who loved him and his other “family” at Talarico Place. Ron dedicated much of time to being at Talarico while Vera was there and then the family of caregivers at Talarico took care of him. Everyone is so grateful for the care that Ron received and a big thank you to all the staff, not just for the care but for the love they all showed towards Ron & Vera from their hearts. He was predeceased by his brother George.

By Ron’s request, there will be no funeral service. Ron was a dedicated Legion member and has requested a toast in his memory. Please feel free to join the family in a toast to honour Ron at the Royal Canadian Legion, branch #170 in Castlegar at 248 Columbia Avenue on Friday February 8th, 2103 at 4:00 p.m.

Cremation has taken place. Both Ron and Vera will be laid to rest together at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations be sent to Talarico Place, 709 10th Avenue Castlegar, BC V1N 2H7.
