March 20, 2021
1935-2021 ~ It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of Roy Hopland, after a long and courageous battle with cancer on March 20, 2021. He is survived by his brother Norman, his daughter Wendy and her husband Carlos, and his loving wife, Gloria.
Roy was born in New Westminster in 1935 and graduated in Mechanical Engineering from UBC in 1961. Shortly thereafter he joined Cominco. He and Gloria were married in 1964 and lived the rest of his life in Rossland, BC.
Roy and Gloria were enthusiastic world travellers. Their list of places visited include many locations most of us can only dream of seeing.
Before and after his retirement, Roy was an accomplished outdoorsman. As well as hunting and fishing, he was an avid downhill skier, cross-country skier, and alpine tourer. In the summer he enjoyed hiking, camping, canoeing, cycling, square dancing with Gloria, and backpacking.
He and Gloria were regular attendees at the Kootenay Mountaineering Club summer camps, and they were among the very first members of that organization. Time takes a toll on us all, but Roy was active until near the end of his remarkable life.
Due to circumstances there will be no services or memorial. But next time you are on a ski or hiking trail, the next time you travel afar, or simply cast a dry fly on a warm summer evening, think of Roy, and how he loved this life.
Al Grywacheski of Alternatives Funeral and Cremation ServicesTM has been entrusted with arrangements.
As an expression of sympathy, donations in Roy's name may be made to the B.C. Wildlife Federation at 101 - 9706 188 Street, Surrey, BC, V4N 3M2 or online at www.bcwf.bc.ca
