November 1, 1932 - August 26, 2023
In loving memory ~
Shirley Tindall Vance, long-time resident of Rossland, B.C., passed away peacefully on August 26, 2023, in Pensacola, FL. Shirley was born November 1st, 1932, and was the only child of Ethel and Carroll Tindall. Her childhood in Rossland fostered a love for the outdoors, and she spent many of her formative years skiing on Red Mountain. On Red, her father, Carroll, was one of the first lift operators and Shirley had the honor of riding the first chair up the mountain alongside her lifelong friend Shirley Pat Perkins. She went on to ski competitively in her younger years and continued to love skiing for the rest of her life.
Shirley graduated from Rossland High School with the 1950 class and continued her schooling at Washington State College to become a schoolteacher. Shirley taught first grade in Rossland and Vancouver until marrying Riley Vance, a United States Air Force officer, on May 2nd of 1960. In their 39 years of marriage, Shirley and Riley travelled the world with stops in the Philippines, Japan, Hong Kong, and across the United States, eventually retiring and splitting time between Rossland and Spokane, WA. She and Riley had two children: a daughter, Carroll "Lynell" Vance, and a son, Wilson "Riley" Vance. Throughout her life, Shirley was a devoted wife and loving mother.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Riley Vance, and her son, Wilson "Riley" Vance. Shirley is survived by her daughter, Lynell, son-in-law, Micah, and her two grandchildren, Scott and Mark Robertson. She is also survived by her beloved and faithful dog Callie, who was often seen accompanying Shirley on many morning walks up the Centennial Trail or around the base of Red.
Shirley will always be remembered for her sense of humor, positivity, and love for animals. It was a rare occasion for a dog to pass Shirley on the trail without receiving a warm greeting and a treat from her jacket pocket. It was always apparent that Shirley fostered a strong community of friends and family, and it only became more obvious in her later years. Shirley also devoted her life to teaching, although most of it was outside of a schoolhouse. She opened doors to new experiences for everyone she knew and was responsible for leading her family through many of Life's lessons. This is especially true for her grandchildren, and all of their friends fortunate enough to meet her, who have been profoundly shaped by her perspectives and their experiences with her in Rossland.
Shirley was deeply loved and will be greatly missed,
but her influence will live on through her family and friends.
