Almighty dollar destroying polar bears

I read last Wednesday’s story about polar bears (Polar Bears Threatened by Early Ice Breakup) and was reminded of a CBC show about them recently (Pricing the Polar Bear).

To think the existence of an entire species depends upon monetary gain is a demeaning testament to what people are or have become.

Based on that unfortunate prospect, one can’t help wondering about human worth, much less to individual usefulness.

Paradoxically, untold millions of dollars are spent scouring the known universe for some semblance of life, while here on Earth, similar sums are spent destroying it.

Sadly, this beautiful white bear is the unwitting canary in the coal mine and its demise could only lead to our own. In fact, there may well come a time when wealth means nothing and survival everything.

The polar bear has its place in a complete world and not on a burgeoning extinction list . . . how could anyone think otherwise?
