Community responds to African relief effort

Thank you to all who were able to submit a donation to the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development & Peace special project “Horn of Africa Drought.”

Thank you to all who were able to submit a donation to the Canadian Catholic Organization for Development & Peace special project “Horn of Africa Drought.”

Donations poured in from every diocese in Canada with a total of $3,481,373.34.

This amount is being matched by our Canadian government and so our suffering African brothers and sisters will now receive close to $7,000,000 in aid because of this one particular outreach.

Our own area, East and West Kootenays and Okanagan, raised $45,000 in donations, which, when doubled, is $90,000. Well done!

Development & Peace has already submitted food and emergency supplies and are in communication in order to identify the most effective strategies for providing assistance in the volatile mix of conflict-plagued Somalia.

Among other activities, are the distribution of food, seeds and livestock, the trucking of water, treatment for malnutrition, the development of irrigation systems, farmer training, income-generating activities and the rehabilitation of boreholes – all with a special aim of reaching the most vulnerable households.

The organization will continue with assistance well into the vital reconstruction phase.

We wish to sincerely thank each of you for responding to our plea and are encouraged by the donations we received from people outside of our own congregation.

Your compassion and your generous response are very much appreciated on behalf of those suffering from this crisis.
