Contribute to African relief effort

As we know, the people living in the Horn of Africa are experiencing severe famine and immediate aid is critical.

Canada’s federal government is matching donations received from a specific list of Canadian Non-Governmental Agencies until Sept. 16. The Canadian Catholic Organization for Development & Peace, the emergency support arm of the Canadian Catholic Church, is one of the agencies recognized for matching of funds.

The Canadian federal government has partnered with Development & Peace for over 40 years in providing over half a billion dollars to fund projects in Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Middle East.

Already, D&P projects had begun in 2010 to assist 40,000 people to obtain improved water supply and emergency food for the worst affected people in parts of Somalia and Ethiopia.  Over the past 10 years, $2,000,000 has been contributed by D&P to food security projects in that region in collaboration with our partners.

By having partners on the ground where we work, we are able to maintain very low overall administration costs.  For the past three years this has been less than 10 per cent while the administration fees for this particular emergency appeal is only 5 per cent.

Donations can be made online, with immediate tax receipts, at www.devp.org or by telephone 1-888-234-8533, or by sending a cheque made out to Development & Peace and indicating Horn of Africa Drought to: Development and Peace, 1425 René-Lévesque Blvd. West. 3rd Floor, Montreal QC H3G 1T7.

The Catholic Community of Trail is also able to forward donations. Tax receipts will be issued. Please call 250-368-6677.
