I’m writing to talk about how important hockey is in our area. On March 2, 1961, the Trail Smoke Eaters started to play what would be a historic World Hockey Championship. The teams they played were all powerhouse hockey teams in those days.
But on March 12, 1961, Canada had a tough game against the USSR (Russia). They beat Russia 5-1 behind a strong goalie named Seth Martin.
I’m so proud of our boys who wore red and white colours that day in March of 1961.
The Spirit of ‘61 even ton March 12 in Trail was a fitting tribute to the team who not only won the world championship, but our hearts.
