The recent decision by Warfield council to no longer contribute to the library or the recreational facilities in Trail seems a good reason for Trail council and non-Trailite facilities users to be disappointed, but there must be a good reason Warfield and the other communities are opting out of these services.
Warfield’s mayor and council have acted in the best interest of the community and its residents. They are on top of where and how best to allocate our tax funds.
I can understand Trail’s frustration from being left with the funding burden, but I think the smaller communities feel they are getting squeezed out, and are having trouble keeping up with the tax base.
One way to get around funding some of these non-essential services and facilities is for non-Trailites to pay up front for the use of the facility and then be reimbursed by the village (which I believe has already been suggested).This makes sense in that instead of the entire community paying for the services, the user pays and is personally reimbursed.
It seems this is going to continue to create more problems for Trail and surrounding communities and we should be looking closer at a joint municipality for the entire area. Just a thought.
