Although the players on Team Avis have changed over the years, there is one name that remains constant.

Fruitvale curler Jason Avis’ name has been on the trophy more than a dozen times, and this year he celebrated his sixth straight Beaver Valley Men’s Club playoff championship on Saturday, March 18 at the B.V. Curling Club.

Avis skipped his Tuesday night team to a 6-2 win over Kootenay Savings Super League winner and B.V. Men’s Bonspiel champion Team Devo Devine in the final. Devine had beaten Avis in the round robin, making them take the long way around to the final, and beat his own Thursday night Avis team in the process.

Team Avis is made up of skip Jason, third Eric Hawkins, second Chris Walker, lead Kyle Jorgenson and fifth Rory May, while Devine’s team consisted of the inimitable Al Bressanutti as third, second Kevin Thomas and lead Ryan Walker.

In the B-Event final, Team Wes Startup, with Jason Buskey, Maurice Plamondon, and Wayne Molnar defeated Marcus Partridge, Paul Goudreau, Dave Stadler, and Phil Godley.

Following the three-week playoff run culminating in Saturday’s finals, the B.V. Men’s Club president Ed Wilcox passed out the league awards at the club AGM and Bean Feed.

The Thursday Night and overall League Champion was awarded to Jason Avis, Rob Vandermeer, Kyle Jones, Brad Mason, and Eric Hawkins.

The League winners for Tuesday night went to Team Devine, with Al Bressanutti, Kevin Thomas, Gord Armishaw, and Ryan Walker.

The “Justin Palmer Memorial” Trophy for the player most keen and dedicated went to a very deserving Kevin Thomas.
