Ball hockey makes May Days debut

The inaugural three-on-three ball hockey tournament is scouting for teams to play in the Beaver Valley May Days tournament.

In recognition of the 100th anniversary organizer Derek Chartres thought it would be a good event to get youth involved and active.

Derek’s father, Dave Chartres, chairs the May Days committee so he thought it would be a good event to help celebrate the century mark.

The Fruitvale man is hoping to recruit eight teams for each of the three divisions: juniors born 2000-01, intermediate 1998-99 and seniors 1996-97.

Chartres encourages any minor hockey aged players in Greater Trail and beyond to put a team together to make this a big success.

“I put posters up in schools, I put them around the communities and a couple of newsletters, even people in Castlegar or Salmo are welcome,” said Chartres.

The tournament faces-off on Saturday, May 28 during the May Days weekend at Fruitvale Elementary tennis courts.

Sponsored by Kootenay Savings, Gerick’s Cycle and Subway, the event will be raffling off prizes throughout the day including a Canucks hockey jersey donated by Gerick’s. Prizes are awarded for the top three in each division.

Five man teams can sign up by calling Derek Chartres at 367-6316.
