BASEBALL - Bay rests stiff back

Jason Bay is hoping to be back in action as the New York Mets head into their final week of spring training today.

The Trail native sat out Saturday’s game against the Atlanta Braves with a stiff back.

Bay told reporters he first felt his back tighten up while swinging the bat Friday and it continued during the night. He said he would have played Saturday had it been a regular-season game.

The three-time all-star said it’s just “stiffness, soreness.”

He was already scheduled to be off for Sunday’s 3-1 loss to St. Louis. New York has three games left in spring training, which wraps up on Wednesday.

The Mets open the 2011 season on Friday in Miami against the Florida Marlins.
