Female hockey team nets first win

Black Jack skiers Rebecca Reid and Geoffrey Richards were back on the track Tuesday at the Canada Winter Games.The duo was competing in the sprint races at the Martock Ski Resort just an hour outside of Halifax.Rebecca Reid finished 10th overall after reaching the B finals in the 1000m women’s sprint races.Salmon Arm’s Alysson Marshall gave B.C. the gold medal followed by Alberta’s Heidi Widmer and the Yukon’s Emily Nishikawa.Reid had the 10th-best qualifying time and moved on to the quarter-final round where she finished third.Reid just missed out on a berth in the A final after finishing fourth in her semifinal race.Richards was 16th in the qualifying race and moved on to the quarter-final where he finished fourth and out of the running for a semifinal spot.Once the final standings were tabulated, Richards was 17th overall with Alberta’s Jesse Cockney winning the gold medal.Reid and Richards get a breather today before returning to the track on Thursday for the women’s 10km and men’s 15km classic races.At the hockey venue, Team B.C. chalked up its first win in the female hockey tournament.The team, which includes Fruitvale’s Ella Matteucci, blanked Newfoundland/Labrador 4-0.The team wraps up round robin play today against Saskatchewan.The final member of the local contingent, Tommy Pitman, will compete on Saturday in the snowboardcross event at the Martock Ski Resort.
