Freestyle skiing: Olympian with Salmo connection

Justin Dorey, whose parents resided in Salmo, was named to the men’s halfpipe team.

The Canadian Freestyle Ski Association named the first 20 athletes to its Olympic Team Sunday, including one athlete with a local connection.

Justin Dorey, whose parents resided in Salmo, was named to the men’s halfpipe team along with Edmonton’s Mike Riddle, Matt Margetts of Penticton, and Noah Bowman of Calgary.

Dorey, 25, grew up in Vernon and now lives in Calgary. He claimed his first World Cup victory earlier this month at Canada Olympic Park.

Meanwhile reigning Olympic champion Alexandre Bilodeau won his third straight World Cup moguls event over the weekend, edging out teammate and rival Mikael Kingsbury of Deux-Montagnes, Que.

Kingsbury and Marc-Antoine Gagnon of Terrebonne, Que., were also named to the early 20-athlete nomination list Monday.
