Grand Forks International - Aussies vie for top spot

The AM Ford Trail Orioles ended their season at the Grand Forks International tournament in the money but it was Australia’s Geelong Baycats that won when it mattered most.

The AM Ford Trail Orioles ended their season at the Grand Forks International tournament in the money but it was Australia’s Geelong Baycats that won when it mattered most.

The O’s and the Baycats snuck into the money round as “wild cards” with identical 1 and 2 records. Unfortunately, the Orioles would lose a close game to Team Canada in the opener, 6-4, to be eliminated.

The Baycats lost to both Langley 9-2 and again to defending champions the Seattle Studs 7-6, to limp into the money. But the team from down-under shocked the Blaze on Sunday, beating them 6-4 to advance to the second round where they also upset the Studs 7-5.

The Aussies are guaranteed at least second place of the $43,000 in prize money as they face the Lewiston Paffile Truckers in the final.

As of press time, the Truckers held a 7-1 lead in the sixth inning.
