Greater Trail swim club: Swimmers blossom

The Greater Trail Swim Club continues to make waves in the pool

The Greater Trail Swim Club (GTSC) continues to make waves in the pool, as it blitzed the competition at the annual Cherry Blossom Swim meet in Penticton earlier this month.

“Penticton was a huge success,” said coach Cody Flegel in a release. “We were able to string together top positions in multiple age categories.”

Since starting the winter club in September, Greater Trail swimmers have improved dramatically, knocking seconds off personal bests and raking in medals and accolades at swim meets across the province.

GTSC’s Sharman Thomas celebrated his 14th birthday in style, claiming first place in his inaugural 1,500-metre freestyle race, and going on to take first in 100-m. backstroke and multiple second-place finishes. Thomas achieved best times in every event he swam, whilst topping off a formidable performance with a first overall finish for the boys 13-and 14-year-old category.

Dylan and Eden Kormendy also had clean sweeps once again placing first in the boys U10 and girls 11-12 year olds respectively, counting 23 first place finishes between them.

Ian Markus meanwhile brought home a second place finish in the 11-12 boys ategory, while sister Tess placed seventh for girls 13-14 year old.

Jackson Konkin swam in his first meet ever placing a very impressive ninth for 11-12 year old boys, which included a first in the 1,500 free and a third-place finish in the 100 free.

Masters division swimmer Kelly Geisheimer followed up an incredible swim in Victoria with another golden sweep, finishing first  in her 400 and 200 free, and 100 and 50-m. backstroke.

“The GTSC team train hard together and their meet results show their dedication and are a great representation of the caliber of swimmers here in the Home of Champions,” added Flegel.

Overall the small contingent finished fifth in the meet against much larger clubs.
