Hawks shut down Spokane shooters

The Beaver Valley Nitehawks used a three-goal outburst in the second period to overcome a 1-0 deficit en route to a 5-2 win over the Spokane Braves on Tuesday in Fruitvale.

The Braves came out firing in the first period outshooting Beaver Valley 14-4 but Nitehawks goalie Mike Vlanich turned aside all but one and finished the night with 31 saves.

But Beaver Valley came alive in the second with three unanswered goals by Ryan Baines, Derek Lashuk and Dallas Calvin to grab hold of the game.

Keenan Patershuk and Ryan Edwards added third-period markers as Beaver Valley chalked up its 31st win of the season.

The Nitehawks wrap up the regular season this weekend with a home-and-home series with the Castlegar Rebels. The teams meet in Castlegar on Friday and Fruitvale on Saturday.

Beaver Valley opens the post season next Tuesday and Wednesday at home versus the Nelson Leafs in a best-of-seven series. Meanwhile, Spokane begins its series in Castlegar on the same nights. Other Kootenay Conference matchups will see Fernie hosting Kimberley and Golden traveling to Creston.
