Ice solid in new year

The Major Midget Kootenay Ice continue to rack up wins in the new year.

The Major Midget Kootenay Ice continue to rack up wins in the new year as they captured three out of four points from the South Island Thunderbirds on the weekend at the Nelson Community Complex.

The Ice doubled up the T-birds 4-2 Sunday after skating to a 3-3 draw on Saturday.

Kootenay’s Darren Medeiros of Castlegar scored the winning goal Sunday late in the third. On a setup from Trail’s Jake Lucchini and Fruitvale’s Mitch Foyle, Medeiros netted his second goal of the game with just under four minutes to play to put the Ice up 3-2.

It was the third power-play goal for the Ice in a game that saw the South Island take three 10-minute majors for checking from behind, a hit to the head and an unsportsmanlike misconduct.

The Ice however maintained their composure and Lucchini notched an empty-netter for his third point of the night with under a minute to go for the 4-2 victory.

Medeiros had tied the game on a power play at 6:16 of the first.

Following a scoreless second period, the T-birds went ahead two minutes into the third on a goal by Cole Glover. But Justin Post converted a pass from Brandon Sookro and knotted it at 2-2 on another power play at the 12:30 mark of the third, before Medeiros popped the winner.

The Ice have three wins, three losses and two ties in January, much improved over the first half of the season where they managed one win.
