Kids’ Triathlon in starting blocks

Triathlons aren’t only for adults, kids can participate too, just ask Trail Parks and Recreation coordinators as they prepare for the second annual Kids’ Triathlon.

The triathlon is planned for Aug. 13 and will again take place at the Trail Aquatic Centre.

“Last year it was a huge success. It was really well organized with lots of rave reviews so we’re hoping for the same this year,” said Trail Rec coordinator Lisa Manaigre.

Last year’s event attracted close to 40 athletes but Manaigre is hoping for more.

“This year we’re expecting more because we’ve extended the age groups, so we added the nine- to 10-year-old age group and added the 11 to 12 year olds.”

Ages four years old and up can join, as distances are determined according to age group.

“We tried to make it somewhat challenging, not too hard, but definitely everything’s longer (for the older groups).”

The triathlon consists of a swim, bike and run that all take place around the aquatic centre.

Parents provide an active role in helping their children through the course, especially at the transition zones between events and particularly for younger athletes.

Upon registration, each participant receives detailed maps of the course for each age group, and a race package that includes a swim cap, a triathlon T-shirt, and water bottle, plus a celebratory luncheon at the end of the race.

While the triathlon is a competition, Manaigre says it’s more about participating and having fun.

The race briefing is at 9 a.m. with the start going in the pool at 10 a.m.

The deadline for registration is Aug.5.

Call the aquatic centre at 364-0888 or Trail Parks and Rec at 368-6484 to register.
