The Major Midget Kootenay Ice played with grit and determination on the road taking three of a possible four points from the Vancouver Canadians on the weekend.
Jake Lucchini led the Ice with two goals and an assist in a 3-2 win Saturday before adding two assists in a 3-3 draw on Sunday at the Planet Ice arena in Coquitlam.
Darren Medeiros notched the game-winning goal with 1:16 to go in the third period after the Canadians scored two third-period goals in less than a minute to tie the game 2-2.
Lucchini opened the scoring at 14:57 in the first period on a setup from Mitch Foyle and Quinn Klimchuk and scored his second goal early in the third to put the Ice up 2-0.
In Sunday’s match, Foyle made a good individual effort to score a late third-period goal unassisted to tie the game at 3-3.
The Ice jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first period on goals from Medeiros and Klimchuk, but the Canadians fought back to tie the game in the second period. Taylor Foote would get the go-ahead goal for the Canadians at the 10:42 mark before Foyle counted his third point on the weekend to tie it.
Lucchini’s five-point weekend catapults him into the top 10 in scoring in the Major Midget league.
The Kootenay Ice travel to Prince George this weekend for a pair of games against the second place Cariboo Cougars.
