The Nelson Leafs made a spectacular third period comeback Friday night grounding the soaring Nitehawks.
The Beaver Valley team was up 4-0 after two periods of play at the Nelson and District Community Complex with Dallas Calvin having a hot night with two goals and an assist.
The Nitehawks’ Sam Barker scored first as the first period was coming to an end, Calvin and Andrew Clark with the assist.
The division rival would continue to dominate throughout the second. Taylor Stafford made it 2-0 under two minutes in from Michael Bell and Jeremy Lucchini. Calvin scored from Sam Barker and Russell Mortlock with 14:30 left in the period.
While Jamie Vlanich was off for Elbowing, Calvin found the back of the net again with help from Archie McKinnon and Ryan Edwards.
But the third period was all Leafs. With under 10 minutes left in the game, Aaron Dunlap opened up the scoring streak for the home team. On a play started by Tyler Garcia and Brandon Sookro it was 4-1.
Penalties would be the Nitehawk’s downfall with the Leafs capitalizing on four power play opportunities in the final six minutes of the game.
Travis Wellman scored from Matthew Naka and Alex Wilkinson and then Vlanich scored, Cole Arcuri with the helper.
Under three minutes left in play, Wilkinson tied it up and the crowd went wild. Vlanich and Wellman assisted on the play.
Back on the power play, Wellman put it through the pipes, Robson Cramer and Wilkinson assisting to make it 5-4.
Leafs on a roll, Wilkinson and Arcuri helped Linden Horswill get the final goal for a 6-4 final.
The Leafs travel to Grand Forks tonight to take on the Border Bruins.
Sitting atop the Neil Murdoch Division, the Leafs will head on an Okanagan road trip next weekend.
