Leafs tie series with Beaver Valley at one game each

A great performance by their defence and their goaltender gave the Nelson Leafs a 1-0 win on Saturday night.

One goal was all it took for the Nelson Leafs to even their playoff series with the Beaver Valley Nitehawks.

Jamie Vlanich (from Travis Wellman and Carson Willans) scored early in the first period of Saturday night's contest and the defences took over from there as Nelson won game two of the playoff series 1-0.

On Friday night, the Leafs dropped the opener 4-3.

Nelson got back to its tight defensive style that was so effective against the Spokane Braves in the first round of the playoffs. They held Beaver Valley to just 21 shots, all of which were stopped by Leafs goaltender Patrick Zubick.

His shutout performance is even more impressive considering Zubick is in the nets because both starting goalie Brad Rebagliati and backup Adam Maida are injured.

The playoff series now switches to Fruitvale where Beaver Valley will play host to the Leafs for a pair of games.

The Leafs and Nitehawks will do battle again on Monday, March 10 and Tuesday, March 11, before returning to the Nelson and District Community Complex for game five on Thursday, March 13.

The puck will drop at 7 p.m.
