The Major Midget Kootenay Ice were back in action on the weekend, but managed just one point in a pair of matches on Vancouver Island.

The Ice were hoping for better results, when they left for Nanaimo to take on the last place North Island Silvertips at the Frank Crane Arena. But the Silvertips were ready, as the Ice fell 3-2 to North Island Saturday and came back from a 5-2 third-period deficit on Sunday, only to fall in overtime.

The Silvertips Joshua McKenzie scored the winning goal on a power play at 1:36 of OT to give North Island the 7-6 victory in Sunday’s wild back-and-forth match up.

The losses drop Kootenay into 11th place in the BCMML standings, sitting one point behind the South Island Royals and two points behind the Silvertips, but, more important, the Ice sit 11-points out of playoff contention.

Kootenay struck first on a goal from Michael Hjelkrem, but the ‘Tips took a 2-1 lead on tallies from Connor Casparie and McKenzie’s first of the night heading to the second period.

Ben Julius-Kotylak put North Island up 3-1 at 17:57 but Kootenay’s Noah Quinn cut the lead to one on a Joseph Davidson feed at 14:01.

Kobe Verbicky restored the two-goal lead on a power play goal at 9:29, and he notched his second of the game six minutes later to give the Silvertips a commanding 5-2 lead heading into the third period.

The Ice regrouped and charged back in the final frame. Mason McLeod converted a Jaxson Waterstreet setup to cut the lead to 5-3 just 37 seconds into the third period, and 19 seconds later Davidson finished an Anthony Williams pass to cut the lead again to one.

The Ice kept the pressure on, and Dawson Reinfjell tied the game at 5-5 just over two minutes into the period. The teams played a tight-checking matchup for the next 10 minutes, until Dayton Nelson broke through and put the Ice up 6-5 with 5:52 to play.

The Silvertips tied it less than a minute later when Parker Bell beat the Ice goalie to deadlock the game at six.

With eight seconds remaining, the official sent Nelson off with a double-minor for head contact, giving the Silvertips a four-minute man-advantage heading into overtime. It didn’t take long, as ‘Tips defenceman McKenzie notched his second of the game and of the season for the 7-6 victory 96 seconds into the extra period.

On Saturday night the Ice got a tying goal from Kaleb Percival to send the teams into the third tied at 1-1. But goals from Hunter MacDonald and Cage Newans’ second of the night put the Silvertips up 3-1.

Quinn cut the lead to 3-2 on a setup from Gavin Damstrom and Nelson with 12:54 left in regulation, but that’s as close as the Ice would get.

The Ice travel to Victoria this weekend for a pair of games against the South Island Royals.
