Rossland just misses bronze

The Rossland Secondary School’s senior girls field hockey team came oh so close to taking home another bronze.

The Rossland Secondary School’s senior girls field hockey team came oh so close to taking home another bronze from the B.C. High School AA field hockey championships in Burnaby Friday.

After falling behind 1-0 to Crofton House, RSS Royals’ Paige Franklin tied the score before heading to the second half. But Crofton scored an uncontested goal, and RSS was unable to find the equalizer as Crofton shut them down for a 2-1 victory.

“It was definitely a close game, I mean it could have gone either way,” said coach Donna Hebert. “We just didn’t seem to quite have the intensity level that we needed to win the bronze game.”

After coming second in their pool, the Royals played in the semi final against a formidable Shawnigan Lake side, a team they upset last year to take home bronze. But this time round, Shawnigan would dominate. RSS could not recover when Shawnigan scored early and would go on to win the match 5-0.

“We played hard but they were by far the best team out of all the teams in the tournament,” said Hebert.

RSS was ranked fourth overall heading into the tournament but were hoping to medal; coming so close but not making the podium is disappointing, she added.

Shawnigan would go on to take gold defeating Collingwood 2-0.
