RTCC golfer wins in Balfour

Moroney and McKay battle it out in two-hole playoff

For the sixth consecutive year a Rossland-Trail Country Club golfer won the opening event, at the West Kootenay Junior Golf tour in Balfour on Saturday.

RTCC golfers Brenan Moroney and Tyler McKay carded identical rounds of 81, topping a field of 33 players on the 6,500-yard Balfour Golf Course, and forcing a playoff.

Both golfers walked off with par on the first play-off hole but on the par-four second, Moroney hit his approach to within two inches of the cup for the tap-in birdie.

McKay followed with another good approach shot but narrowly missed a seven-foot birdie putt to extend the match.

The six-year streak started back in 2006 . Matt Gould started out the win streak, followed by Garry Janni, who then triumphed in the circuit’s first stop for three straight years before Colin Gill came out on top last year.

Redstone’s Kevin Bennett took the 17-18 year old division shooting an 83. McKay led the 15-16 group while Braden McKay (RTCC) finished second in the 13-14 bracket with a score of 84.

Nolan Taylor from Granite Point took the Long Drive and KP went to Kevin MacDonald of Champion Lakes.

The next event will go Sunday at Christina Lake Golf Course. If anyone wishes to enter they must register before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
