Sledge hockey - Mondin and team return today from Japan tourney

Trail native Mike Mondin and the rest of the Canadian Sledge Hockey Team will be returning home today following the Japan Para Ice Sledge Hockey championship on Monday in Nagano.

Canada captured a silver medal in the tournament after a 1-0 loss to Norway on Monday.

Mondin is the head coach of the national team.

The tournament, which also featured teams from the U.S. and the host country, was delayed in the wake of last week’s 8.9-magnitude earthquake that struck northeast Japan.

Nagano is located more than 900 kilometres from Sendai, the region that was hardest hit by the disaster.

The Japanese Paralympic Committee postponed Saturday’s games and rescheduled them for Sunday, which pushed the final to Monday.

Canada finished the tournament with a 2-1 round-robin record after beating the United States and Japan
