TCHL - Race gets tighter

League playoffs set to start on March 10

With less than two weeks to go in the Trail Commercial Hockey League regular season, the playoff picture has become even more uncertain.

Following last week’s action, only four points separates the top three teams in the TCHL.

Although Red Hotel holds games in hand on Re/Max, currently tied for first, and third place OK Tire, the next two weeks of play will be crucial in determining the matchups for the semifinals, which begin March 10.

Re/Max finally got a glimpse of the view from the top of the standings thanks to back-to-back wins against Firebird on Sunday and last Thursday.

David Eccles scored five goals and added two assists as Re/Max outscored Firebird 10-6 on Sunday. Mark Hutchinson added a pair for Re/Max while Eric Hill had the hat trick for Firebird.

Last Thursday, it would be two goals from Graham Proulx that propelled Re/Max to a 5-2 win over Firebird.

Meanwhile, OK Tire did its part to tighten up the standings by knocking off Rex Hotel 4-3 last week.

Three goals in the second period, including the game winner from Kyle Boutin, kept OK Tire mathematically alive in its bid for first place.

They crept even closer on Sunday with a 4-2 win over the Arlington Inn. Mike Fudge provided all the offence OK Tire would need as he scored three times for the winners.

Darrell Zol had both of Arlington’s markers.

League play resumes tonight at the Cominco Arena with OK Tire and Arlington meeting again while the co-holders of top spot, Rex Hotel and Re/Max, square off for the final time in the regular season.

Game times are 7:15 p.m. and 8:30 p.m.
