Ice hosts Major Midget League’s power house in Nelson

The Kootenays’ two midget AAA teams came away without a win during their respective weekend games.

In Nelson, the Kootenay Wildcats took on the league-leading Thompson-Okanagan Rockets for a pair of B.C. Female Midget AAA games.

The Rockets, who have lost only three times in 21 games, showed their solid defence in the opening match limiting the Wildcats to just 15 shots in a 4-0 victory.

Sunday, the Rockets broke open a 2-2 deadlock with three second-period goals en route to a 5-3 win.

Daley Oddy had a pair of goals for the Wildcats with Shea Weighill adding a single.

The team returns to action this weekend in Nelson when they host the Prince George Cougars. Game times are 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and 7:45 a.m. on Sunday.

Meanwhile in the Lower Mainland, the Kootenay Ice had its hands full against the Vancouver Northeast Chiefs in B.C. Major Midget League action last weekend.

The Ice managed only one goal in a pair of losses to the Chiefs. Saturday Jacob Boyczuk spotted the Ice a 1-0 first-period lead but the team couldn’t hold it and fell 3-1. The Chiefs followed that with a 6-0 shutout on Sunday.

The Chiefs are clinging to the final playoff spot in the Major Midget division with a five-point lead over the North Island Silvertips.

This weekend in Nelson, the Ice takes on the defending champion and current league leading Vancouver Northwest Giants.

The Giants feature two of B.C.’s highly-touted prospects in Alex Kerfoot and Sam Reinhart.

Kerfoot leads the league in scoring with 31 goals and 86 points in 31 games. Reinhart, a first-round WHL Bantam Draft pick by the Kootenay Ice in 2010, is second in scoring with 29 goals and 66 points in 30 games.

Game times at the Nelson Civic Centre are 6 p.m. on Saturday and 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
