The West Kootenay Diamondbacks came one game short of making it to the state championship in the Washington State American Legion AA district tournament on the weekend.
After beating Cheney 10-0 to open the tournament, the Dbacks suffered their first loss to Mt. Spokane, 3-1, Thursday in a dramatic walk off three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
But WKD would battle back, defeating Ferris 9-6 with Joe Ferraro getting the victory.
One more win would send the Dbacks to the B final guaranteeing them a spot in the State championship.
Sadly, they came up against a tough Gonzaga Prep team on Saturday and fell in a close 7-5 match. The damage came in the third when Gonzaga counted six runs taking a lead they would not relinquish.
In American Legion A action the West Kootenay Phillies bowed out early losing its opening game 13-4 to Mt. Spokane before succumbing 7-6 to Deer Park on Friday.
