Winnifred Johnson (nee Hughes)

November 27, 2010

Johnson-Winnie

It is with great sadness that the family announces the death of Winnifred Johnson on November 27, 2010. She was born January 7, 1917.

Our mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt was predeceased by her husband Fred in 2001. Winnie is survived by her two children Doug and Carol, along with grandchildren Tammy, Joel, Kim and Wes. She also leaves behind six great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces, nephews and their families.

Winnie was raised in Fernie, one of ten children. She came to Trail in the late 30’s where she worked at the hospital. It was at this time that Winnie was swept off her feet by dad. They were married in 1942.

Mom will be remembered for her involvement in her Lodge, the Pythian Sisters, which she attended until two years ago. Square dancing was a passion of hers also. She and dad were originals in the Square Dance Club formation in the early 50’s. Winnie was dedicated in all aspects of the Trail United Churches. She volunteered for years at the hospital and was always cooking, baking or sewing for some worthy cause.

A graveside service and get together will be announced at a later date. Al Grywacheski of Personal Alternative Funeral Services “Carberry’s Chapel” is entrusted with arrangements.

As an expression of sympathy, donations in Winnie’s memory may be made to the Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital Health Foundation, 1200 Hospital Bench Road, Trail, BC V1R 4M1, or http://www.kbrhhealthfoundation.ca.

As we read this, we are comforted in the knowledge that mom is now sharing a glass of wine with dad.
