Perhaps it’s a result of watching too many NHL playoff games, but, as David Dudeck points out, if you look at these hummingbird photos, it brings to mind that postseason ritual — the playoff beard.
“These appear to be Calliope hummingbirds which are noteworthy for being North America’s smallest bird,” Dudeck notes.
“They are very busy and the males have that distinctive display on the face and throat area,” he adds.
“Maybe the birds are disappointed that the Red Wings and Blackhawks are not in the playoffs!”
After playoffs ended Sunday night with the Edmonton Oilers winning game 6 against the Dallas Stars, Game 1 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final — Oilers versus Florida Panthers — is scheduled for Saturday, June 8, in Florida.
After joining the NHL in 1979, the Oilers went on to win the Stanley Cup on five occasions: 1983–84, 1984–85, 1986–87, 1987–88 and 1989–90. The last time the Oilers went to the Stanley Cup Final was in 2006.
