Smokettes’ Kootenay hockey tournament raises money for goodwill

Hockey tourney includes teams from Rossland, Grand Forks, Nakusp, and Revelstoke

The Trail Smokettes held their annual fundraiser earlier this year, and over the past week, team members have given out money raised to some great local causes.

“We hold an annual fundraising hockey tournament every February where we host eight men’s and five women’s teams from Rossland, Grand Forks, Nakusp, Revelstoke, and we even have a team from Pender Island (Gulf of Georgia, B.C.) that comes out every year,” explains Smokette Bridgett Kivell. “We rely on corporate monetary donations and local business donations for door prizes to help us offset the cost of running the tournament so we can give as much back to our communities as possible,” she adds.

“We also make donations to the local food banks in Trail and Rossland, and the Rossland Fireman’s Christmas hamper program in the winter.”

The Trail Smokettes describe themselves as a hockey team for young to old, beginners to experts, all ready to have some fun.

“Cheers, beers, brassieres! Smokettes!”
