The Rossland Heritage Commission is asking locals to lend their muscle for “Cemetery Cleanup Day” in the Columbia Cemetery on Sunday, May 26, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

“We are looking for volunteers from the community to come out and help us with this project … to spend a few hours cleaning up the overgrown grass and moss surrounding many of the graves,” the commission explains.

“We are engaged in cleaning up the cribbing around the graves and also have a mason cleaning and straightening some of the headstones.”

The Columbia Cemetery is a pioneer cemetery, first established by the City of Rossland in 1898.

It is the final resting place of over a thousand Rossland residents who died between 1896 and 1945.

The Rossland Heritage Commission is committed to restoring and preserving this vital piece of the town’s heritage.

The Columbia Cemetery can be found by driving down Highway 3B to Mountain View Cemetery.

Enter the cemetery road and drive up to the back where there is an unpaved road which leads to the Columbia Cemetery.

“This is a multi-year effort for our commission, partly funded by Heritage B.C.,” the commission adds.

“If interested please come and join our crew.”
