• Sunday Cinema presents “The King’s Speech.” Colin Firth plays Bertie, a man suffering from a debilitating speech impediment but with the help of a speech therapist played by Geoffrey Rush, overcomes his struggles, takes over the crown of England, and leads his country into war. • Faces and Figures – The Divine Spark opens Friday (5-7 p.m.) at Visac Gallery. From prehistoric fertility figures to the modern realist painter, the human form has long been a vehicle for self-expression. “The Divine Spark” explores perceptions of how the human body relates to the physical and emotional environment. • Iron Mountain Theatre presents “Ski Bum: The Musical.” Thursday and Saturday at Rossland Secondary School, 7 p.m. $15.

• The fourth-annual J. L. Crowe Variety Show raises funds for scholarships and showcases talent from all grades. It also recognizes the dedication of a past teacher with the Golden Apple Award. Thursday, Feb. 3 at 7 p.m. at Charles Bailey Theatre. Tickets $12 at the box office.

• The Trail Library is celebrating Family Literacy Day. Join staff in the Red Room for stories, songs, snacks, games and crafts Thursday. Up to age five: 12:30-2 p.m., 6-12-year-old program: 3-4:30 p.m. Parent or caregivers must attend.

• Local charities and businesses are raising funds for a cause of their choice by selling “Breast Friends Cookbooks.” The recipes have generated over $1 million for cancer research. Rossland Winter Carnival

• Kicks off with the 114th Carnival Parade at 6:30 p.m. Friday. After the parade, there will be free hotdogs and hot chocolate for the kids, a bonfire and season pass draw at Queen and Columbia.

• Sonny Samuelson Bobsled Race takes off at 9:30 a.m. Saturday from Spokane Street.

• The 22nd Annual Rotary Wine Festival at the Prestige. Semi-formal evening of fine wines, hors d’oeuvres, silent auction, art and entertainment, 7-10 p.m. Saturday, tickets $50 at Powderhound.

• Trail Society for the Performing Arts presents “The Schumann Letters.” Colin Fox narrates the story of the composer’s life and love of Clara Wierk and his triumph and tragedies, with soprano Susan Gilmour Bailey and pianist Michael Kim.
