It finally happened for the first time since Trail was incorporated in 1901.
The city has its first woman mayor.
Mayor Lisa Pasin was officially passed the gavel by former mayor Mike Martin during the 98th inaugural council meeting held Monday night in downtown Trail.
The mayor ran on her merits, which included sitting as a Trail councillor these last four years. During her first mayoral speech, Pasin talked about her vision for the next four years.
Key elements she touched on included committing annual tax dollars to support an infrastructure renewal, economic development to diversify the tax base, and retaining Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital as the regional hospital.
“I believe it is the wish of our community to move forward with the progress and momentum that the city has experienced over the last four years,” she said. “With this mandate, comes a shift to core service improvements which will ensure Trail remains a vibrant and livable city.”
Also sworn before a crowd of about 200, were incumbent councillors Robert Cacchioni, Carol Dobie, Eleanor Gattafoni Robinson and Sandy Santori and newcomers Coun. Paul Butler and Coun. Colleen Jones.
“As elected officials, our strength comes through diversity of background, skills and abilities,” Pasin said. “Each member of council brings unique talents and interests to their role, which will be leveraged to move the City of Trail forward.”
A highlight was the acknowledgement of dedicated volunteers who recently stepped down after many years of service. Brian Volpatti and Keith Smyth were recognized for their work, respectively, with Greater Trail Home of Champions and Silver City Days. Lorna Nutini was posthumously recognized for her many years of service with the Trail Historical Society. Jack Beard, Neil Craig, Al Doherty and Don Nutini were recognized for their exceptional service at the Trail Regional Airport.
Council’s first meeting with municipal business on the agenda will be Tuesday, 6 p.m., at city hall.
