Cause of house fire under investigation

Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire is still trying to determine what started a blaze that engulfed a Montrose home Wednesday morning.

Kootenay Boundary Regional Fire is still trying to determine what started a blaze that engulfed a Montrose home Wednesday morning.

Trail, Montrose and Fruitvale firefighters responded to the house fire at 650 9th Ave., where the fire started on the upper floor and worked its way up to the attic.

“We’ve completed our investigation but unfortunately with something like this it’s really hard to determine exactly what was the cause,” said regional fire chief Terry Martin.

“For the size of the house, it was a pretty big fire because the top floor of the house was pretty gutted by the fire but it was just water and smoke damage to the main floor and into the  basement.”

Martin will meet with a fire investigator with the insurance company today to compare his findings.

“The insurance company brings in their own private fire investigator, and that’s common in any city, not just Trail,” he said. “We always try to work together with these people to come up with a good answer and a good conclusion because we’re all doing this for the same reason.”
