Cause of Waneta fire still unknown

The electrical fire on in the Waneta industrial area Wednesday was still unexplained Thursday while crews worked to restore service.

The electrical fire on a Telus line in the Waneta industrial area Wednesday was still unexplained Thursday while Fortis and Telus crews worked to restore service to affected customers in the area.

Although power was restored to the last customer who was affected by 6 p.m. Wednesday evening Telus had a large construction crew working on replacing a kilometre of cable and other equipment damaged by the fire.

Shawn Hall, media relations representative for Telus, said that the restoration work had to be delayed until the electrical fault had been dealt with by Fortis staff.

“Our crew couldn't get in until it was safe but late Wednesday Fortis was able to identify the fault,” said Hall.

“There was extensive damage and 24 customers were affected, mostly businesses.”

As of press time Thursday phone and internet service was expected to be restored by early evening.
