Fruitvale bites at fruit tree idea

Warm thoughts of picking fruit from neighbourhoods may have Fruitvale living up to its name.

Village council bit into councillor Tabatha Webber’s concept Monday to potentially replace up to six boulevard trees, scheduled to be taken down this year, with fruit trees.

“We need to do some further investigation but it seems like a really interesting idea,” said Fruitvale Mayor Libby Nelson.

However, she acknowledged some consequences with growing fruit downtown like attracting bears.

But Webber assured her that other communities alike have implemented fruit picking events to ensure the branches stay bare during bear season.

Council has asked for more information about the availability of heritage fruit trees that will thrive in the village’s eco region before they make a final decision.
