Sleeping residents escaped from this home between Rossland and Railway avenues before it was engulfed.

Fire consumed a Trail duplex early Tuesday morning in the Gulch, completely gutting one unit and causing extensive smoke damage to the other, but the cause of the fire is still unknown.

Eight firefighters from Warfield and 10 from Trail responded to a call at around 4 a.m. and were on the scene at 249 Railway Lane in minutes.

“Unit A was completely involved when we arrived on scene, but the extent of fire damage was contained in the one suite,” said Capt. Jason Milne of Regional Fire Rescue.

The firefighters had the blaze under control within 35 minutes and completely out an hour later. No damage was done to adjoining structures or homes other than the second unit.

Each of the suites had an occupant but both managed to get out despite the lack of any fire suppression system, says Milne.

The older home is now uninhabitable because of fire and smoke damage.

The Trail Fire Captain encourages people to have smoke alarms in their homes.

The names of the inhabitants were not released and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
