Police investigate Salmo traffic fatality

An investigation is underway looking into the death of Roger Irwin, who died while driving on Highway 6 near Third St in Salmo.

The BC Coroner, Salmo RCMP and West Kootenay Traffic Services are continuing to investigate a traffic fatality that occurred in Salmo on Sunday.

The RCMP press release reports that, just before 9:30 a.m, the Salmo RCMP responded to a crash that involved a single automobile and a parked dump truck on Railway Avenue (Hwy 6) near Third Street in Salmo.

According to witnesses, the automobile made a wide left turn onto Highway 6 from Third Street into the far parking lot on the west side of the highway, said the police report.

The car then drove slowly into the rear tires on the driver’s side of the parked (unoccupied) dump truck.

The male driver, 52-year old Roger Irwin, was transported to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital by ambulance, where he was pronounced deceased.

In the initial investigation it appeared that Irwin, a resident of Salmo, may have been experiencing a medical condition just prior to the collision.
