Salmo - Youths use gas to set fire

Police were called to KP Park on Aug. 16 when four youth allegedly set fire to a gazebo with stolen gasoline.

A potential disaster has Salmo RCMP reminding residents the dangers of playing with fire.

Police were called to KP Park on Aug. 16 when four youth allegedly set fire to a gazebo with stolen gasoline.

The blaze was put out by a crew working in the park so the police went straight into looking for the youth – between 8 and 12 years old – who were located within minutes.

“Damage was minimal to the cement floor at the gazebo but potential for disaster with the fire spreading to the structure and trees in the park was great,” said Staff Sgt. Dan Seibel of the Kootenay Boundary Regional Detachment.

“The police are continuing with the investigation and will be dealing with the youth involved,” he added.
