Monday afternoon (Nov. 13), Trail police responded to Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital after a Nakusp man, 32, allegedly threatened medical staff with two makeshift clubs before fleeing a secure area in the hospital.

The man had been apprehended by RCMP under the Mental Health Act and was under detention at the time he made threats to staff.

Once the man escaped, police say he attempted to steal a vehicle outside of the hospital but was unsuccessful. He fled on foot and was located shortly after by the Trail RCMP. He was taken into custody without incident.

Several criminal charges are under investigation and police say they will forward a report to Crown counsel.

“We owe our thanks and appreciation to our health care staff who have to deliver care, and navigate health and safety issues, while remaining professional and calm on a daily basis,” says Wicentowich. “Trail RCMP appreciates their hard work and dedication to their duty.”
